A.V. Mashirin, V.I. Shvetsov An empirical study of the dependence of the velocity on density of traffic flow

Abstract.

Paper presents the analysis of the empirical properties of traffic flow on the basis of observational data obtained from induction loops. We investigated the dependence of average speed from the density of vehicles of different types. The analysis showed that the dependence of the average velocity from the density of cars and trucks can be correctly reduced to the function of one variable – the effective density. We obtained the value of scale coefficient for trucks. This value was calculated without using the concept of dynamic occupied space, and rather on the basis of measuring the direct influence of the density of vehicles of different types to the average velocity. We obtained empirical dependencies of the velocity and travel time of vehicles of various types from the effective density. It is shown that the time travel actually coincide in heavy traffic.

Keywords:
